Why:  Begin your day with a conversation with Jane Carney and some light refreshments.  Jane Carney is currently of counsel in the Riverside law firm of Roth Carney APC and has practiced law for more than 30 years in the corporate and business arena.

Ms. Carney has lived in Riverside since 1977 and has been active in a wide variety of civic and community affairs.  She currently serves as a member of the Governing Board for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, to which she was appointed in 2000 by the California State Senate’s Rules Committee.  Civic leader Jane W. Carney was appointed to the AQMD Governing Board in March 2000 by the Senates Rules Committee.  Ms. Carney was elected to the board in January 2006.  She is currently assisting the Riverside Community College District Foundation as a member of the Circle of Innovation.  She is also currently serving on the Advisory Committee of the Path of Life Ministries Homeless Shelters.  Ms.  Carney also served as President of the Monday Morning Group of Western Riverside County, a group of civic leaders; as a trustee of Riverside Community College; and as President of the Citizens University Committee.  She has also chaired Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge’s Action Task Force for Good Jobs, and co-chaired the fundraising campaign for United Way of the Inland Valleys.  Ms. Carney is a past President of the Riverside Downtown Association and of the Riverside County Bar Association, and was instrumental in the successful effort to locate a federal district court in the Riverside/San Bernardino region.  She has received numerous awards, including Citizen of the Year from the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce, Woman of Achievement Award from the Black Voice News, and a Woman of the Year award from the California State Senate.  A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Ms. Carney received her law degree from the University of California, Davis, where she was also elected to the Order of the Coif.

She was married to the late Francis M. Carney, a founding faculty member of the University of California, Riverside, and is the mother of three adult children.

In order to bring you the best quality speakers and venues, we are going to charge a nominal $10 fee for non-Pick members. A special “Scavenger Hunt” will take place the month of January, as Division 9 Gallery and the Pick Group distribute five limited edition artist coasters throughout local downtown bars and restaurants. Collect all five coasters and bring them to Division 9 Gallery for the closing reception of Coaster Conundrum on January 20th to receive 1 of 5 limited edition posters signed by all the artists!

The Pick Group of Riverside, an organization of Young Professionals involved in the community, is kicking off a “Coaster Conundrum, Helping You Recognize Inland Arts” campaign. The goal of the project is to promote Riverside as a cultural and artistically innovative hotspot.The Pick Group has commissioned five locally known artists to provide their best representation of Riverside culture to be displayed on one side of a set of 12,000 custom drink coasters. The flip side will provide advertising spots for businesses and organizations that support the project. The custom coasters will be circulated throughout local establishments for daily use when serving beverages. Not only will these coasters represent the work of the local artists, they will also serve as a constant reminder that community members support artists within the City of Arts and Innovation.

Come pick up a coaster or two during Arts Walk at Division 9 Gallery, 3850 Lemon St, on Thursday, January 5th from 6 to 9pm.

The Group will also being hosting a special Coaster Conundrum event on the evening of January 20th, more details soon!  Be on the lookout for coasters around town starting tonight, you may just want to collect them.

Alan Shields

The Pick Group is pleased to shine the spotlight on Alan Shields as the featured individual for being a New Pick Member.  Mr. Shields is a Group Sales Manager for the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, California.  Alan graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelors in History.  He went on to receive his Masters of Business Management from the University of Redlands, where he is also a fellow of the Whitehead Leadership Society.  Alan enjoys reading and volunteering.

Mr. Shields shares his career path, thus far, and knowledge in his particular field:

I started my career at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa as a valet attendant.  I then moved to the sales and catering department as an administrative assistant and to room reservations supervisor.  I am currently a group sales manager here at the hotel. The group sales department sells hotel sleeping rooms in blocks of 10.  We also sell meeting space along with the room blocks.  The difference between sales and catering is that catering only sells meeting and event space.

The best part of my job is that I get to interact with the public, and I get to bring organizations to Riverside.  The renovations to the Convention Center next year will help Riverside draw larger conventions to the city, and help showcase the rich history of the hotel.

Riverside’s young professionals gather in a fun and fast paced evening to meet their match, their volunteer match that is, at the 4th Annual Pick & Pledge, Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 5:30 PM.

Pick & Pledge is similar to speed dating; however participants are meeting
organizations. Coordinated by the Pick Group’s Civic Involvement Committee (CIC), this is a great space to engage in the city and learn of opportunities available to connect passion and talent with real action.

Open to the public, young professionals are encouraged to come and make
new connections with members of their community.  The Pick Group’s event
provide the only opportunity in the Inland Empire for Young Professionals to connect socially, develop professionally, and engage civically for the betterment of Riverside.

CIC Chair Jesse Limon and past CIC Chair Brian Moore, present a check on behalf of the Pick Group to Rose Mayes, Executive Director of the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Inc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(RIVERSIDE, CA)—The Pick Group of Riverside matched member donations and gave a total of $500 to the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County annual Thanksgiving Giveaway.

“It is great to see The Pick Group give to families in need. Their efforts helped us reach our goal of providing turkeys to over 250 families,” said Rose Mayes, Executive Director for the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Inc.

Spearheaded by its Civic Involvement Committee, The Pick Group wanted to take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity to give back to its local Riverside community. Civic Involvement Committee Chair, Jesse Limon, said, “Witnessing a group of young professionals so willing to give to their community is truly inspiring.”

The Pick Board of Directors challenged their members to support the cause and, as suspected, members came through by donating $250 which the Board of Directors matched. “We wanted to leverage Board support by encouraging Pick members to embrace the spirit of giving,” said President of the Board, Ana Yeager Lee.

The Pick Group’s donation allowed the Fair Housing Council to purchase approximately 40 additional turkeys to give to Riverside families in need.

The Pick Group provides opportunities for career-minded young professionals to connect socially, develop professionally, and engage civically for the betterment of Riverside. Their collective effort as a volunteer driven non-profit organization is contributing to Riverside’s development into one of the most innovative, enjoyable, and healthy places to live and work for citizens of all backgrounds and experiences.

Why: Please join us for an evening of beer tasting as Mark Harris (BJCP National Beer Judge) provides us with 9 different tastings of beers from around the world.  As you enjoy the tastings, Mark will share his knowledge of the history of beer in Germany, Belgium and America.  Also, bring your smart phone because we will use a free app throughout the tasting.

The event is limited to Pick Group Members only and to the first 24 registrations.  We have a waitlist too.
